Recently we have just changed our office production router from the old GWN7000 to GWN7003. In case you do not know, GWN7003 is a wired Multi-WAN Gigabit VPN Router<\/a> that has tons of features and improvements over GWN7000. Well, and since we do have access points for wireless connection, it is a no-brainer for us to use GWN7003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article will be guiding you on how to configure GWN7003 as a PPTP server so that you can access remotely to the office network via your Windows laptop which acts as a PPTP client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I understand that there is a PPTP guide<\/a> in Grandstream documentation page<\/a> but unfortunately, it seems a little outdated. And therefore, I have decided to draft up a new guide for GWN7003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 main steps –<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Create and configure the PPTP Server<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Configure the routing rules<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Create the PPTP Users<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Configuration from the Windows side<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    • Create and configure the PPTP Server<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Create the PPTP server in GWN7003 by navigating to VPN > PPTP > PPTP Servers > Add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Name: Anything<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Server Local Address: This will be the PPTP server address, and it cannot be on the same network segment as the VLAN. For eg, my router’s local LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1 and this is the default VLAN (ID 1), and therefore I cannot use this IP address as the server’s local address in PPTP. This setting here is what differentiates it from GWN7000. Different VLAN segment for the PPTP server provides higher security. I put 192.168.3.1 here. (on a different segment instead).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Username: anything<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Password: anything<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Interface: Select your WAN interface<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      IP Masquerading: Enable (default)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      MTU: 1430 (default)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Remote Subnet: 192.168.3.0\/24 (so that all of my PPTP clients will be given a 192.168.3.x as IP address)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Configure the routing rules<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Go to the VLAN settings under Network Settings > LAN > VLAN > VLAN 1 (default VLAN)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Make sure you add the Office PPTP as the Destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Go to Firewall > Traffic Rules > Forwarding Rules and add a new rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Ensure that the Office PPTP is configured as \u2018Source Group\u2019, and \u2018Destination Group\u2019 will be Default LAN and WAN. Make sure the Action is \u2018Accept\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Create the PPTP Users<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Head back to VPN > Remote Users. Click on \u2018Add\u2019 to create your PPTP Users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Name: Anything<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Status: Enable<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Server name: Select \u2018Office PPTP\u2019 from the dropdown<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Username: anything (I use jaz as an example)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Password: <key in your own password><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Client Subnet: 192.168.3.0\/24<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          And it\u2019s done from the GWN7003 router side!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          We may proceed to configure it from the Windows client side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Configuration from the Windows side<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Go to Network & Internet > VPN > Add a VPN Connection and key in the following \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Note that the server name or address has to be your PUBLIC IP ADDRESS OF THE GWN7003.         <\/p>\n\n\n\n
